ok, moving on… bucket lists
I don’t have a bucket list…do you? there are writing-related works that I think would be cool to accomplish—like write a REAL book (I’ve written a fake one before and it has terrible reviews/comments and don’t worry I agree with all of them), get a screenplay and/or play produced, etc—but for me I consider these like surface-level, clout-ish things bc I’m honestly not driven by any real ambition to make “art” or whatever, at least not rn, I just kind of engage with these things just so ppl think I’m relevant when I end up at media functions or whatever. it’s a curse that comes with living in new york city for too long.
but I do think there’s value in having a bucket list bc then I’d have life goals to work towards, and it’s a way to give my life some meaning. (this is not negative self-talk, by the way, I’m toxicly optimistic to a fault.) I know I’m not alone in this bc I have convos with friends all the time about how we’re ditching ambition and opting for doing the bare minimum to live peacefully. the ladder we’re trying to climb is a step stool. but if I’m not actively trying to accomplish “cool shit” then what else is there?
I’ve been considering another kind of bucket list (esp as I barrel into a new decade of my life next week!) which is the “eulogy virtues.” peter attia explains in outlive:
I feel like most ppl aren’t out here making lists of eulogy virtues, of course, they’re just living their lives and trying to make good while they’re here. but it does kind of shift my thinking a bit! and how I want to be more thoughtful about the ways I’m presenting the second act of my life. (and selfishly, I’d like to be the kind of person who, when I die, ppl will be devastated.)
anyway, I’ll leave you with this: my dad, a worldwide traveler and explorer, is on an epic adventure at this very moment. he’s crossing off an item from his bucket list! I can’t read that much korean at once so I ran his text through a translation app (and, therefore, I cannot verify if anything’s accurately translated) but the accidental poetry of it is one I found beautiful (pls don’t cancel my dad for the khan thing).
actually one final note, bc this sentiment from john hits deep (we love new york!!!):
OK SEE YOU LATER!!!!!!!!!
